Coimbatore, also known as Kovai, is the second largest city in TamilNadu and it is a major commercial centre. However, it owns its own history of empires and their ups and downs. The region has been ruled by the Cheras, the Cholas, the later Pandyas, the Vijayanagar Empire and the Madurai Nayaks.
In the 17th century, the city became a part of the Kingdom of Mysore. In 1799, it came under the rule of the British East India Company. Coimbatore’s growth as a commercial centre began in 1930’s with the rapid textile boom happened there. Now, Coimbatore is an important textile and manufacturing hub of Tamil Nadu.
