Nilgiri biosphere reserve, the first biosphere reserve in India, was established in 1986. The reserve is located in the Western Ghats and in the Nilgiri hill ranges of South India. It is spread over a huge area of 5520km which cover three southern states of India- Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The biosphere is home to several home-grown communities but Cholaniackens are the only surviving hunter-gatherers of the Indian sub continent residing in the Nilgiri region. The reserve also consists of a number of protected areas that mainly come under Nilgiris, Erode and Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, of which the Nilgiris is termed as the Manipulation zone in the whole bio- region. The Mudhumalai Wild life Sanctuary and National park, the Wayanad Wild life Sanctuary, the Bandhipur National Park, the Nagarhole National Park, the Nugu Wild life Sanctuary, the Mukurthy National Park and the Silent valley national park are those protected areas which comes under this green dale. The reserve is the home of large number Flora and Fauna which includes over 100 species of Mammals, 350 species of birds, 80 species of reptiles, 39 species of fish, 31 of amphibians, 3300 species of flowering plants among which 1232 are endemic and other 316 species and innumerable invertebrates.
