Kozhikode(also known as Calicut) has great importance in the history of Kerala and India as well.In 13th century, the city of Calicut came into existence when the king of Ernad, udaiyavar conquered the region around Ponniankar and he built a fort at a place called Velapuram, now known as Calicut. Enchantingly, the name Calicut is derived from 'calico,' the superior mixture of hand-woven cotton cloth said to have originated from this place.
